Joined By Grace
Marriage Preparation
Joined by Grace was developed with one goal in mind: to help engaged couples build strong, life-giving, and lasting unions by inspiring them to welcome God into their marriages more completely.
Offering couples the tools they need for life after their wedding day, Joined by Grace shows how the seven sacraments can help build marriages that are rooted in Christ by teaching couples to accept and be fully present to one another, give themselves completely, and serve and forgive each other.
Based on the teachings of the popes in Familiaris Consortio and Amoris Laetitia.
Wondering why marriage preparation is necessary?
Listen to Joined By Grace creators, John and Teri Bosio, discuss this topic on The Christian Circle podcast!
“The program’s approach is well-grounded in the Church’s sacramental theology and provides a basic appreciation of the life of grace at work within us. Suitable for use with couples at every level of faith development and knowledge, it makes good use of mentor couples as companions for the engagement and sets the stage for ongoing support and marriage enrichment.”
The Beatitudes
A Couple's Path to Greater Joy
This marriage enrichment program explores the Beatitudes as the path to holiness in Christian marriage. Holiness is the source of joy in marriage.
The program invites couples to reflect on their relationship and guides them to understand marriage as their vocation. The videos and the book provide the input for each of the six sessions, and the handouts provide conversation starters to help couples reflect privately on their marriage.
Saint John Paul II taught us: "People are made for happiness... It is told in the Book of Genesis: God created man and woman in paradise, Eden, because he wanted them to be happy... The 'Sermon on the Mount' marks out the map of this journey. The eight Beatitudes are the road signs that show the way." (John Paul II - World Youth Day 2002)

The program is very versatile. It can be used as a six sessions parish "Date Night" program, or as a tool for small group discussion, or as a couples' retreat using the videos as presentations for each session. The Beatitudes program is based on the book: Blessed is Marriage: A Guide to the Beatitudes for Catholic Couples, by John Bosio (Twenty-Third Publications, 2012)
The following are the titles and themes of the six videos and couples' session.
Session 1: Your Marriage is Your Call to Holiness explores: “Blessed are the poor in Spirit.” Poverty in spirit means acknowledging our need for God and one another. Some of the skills spouses are encouraged to develop are paying attention and listening to God and to one another.
Session 2: Your Marriage is a Dance explores two Beatitudes: “Blessed are those who mourn” and those who are “persecuted for righteousness’ sake.” Marriage is not immune to suffering. Spouses are encouraged to take responsibility for their shortcomings and to accept the discomforts of life graciously. They are also encouraged to stand up for what they believe.
Session 3: Your Marriage is a Three-Legged Race explores two related Beatitudes: “Blessed are the meek” and “Blessed are the peacemakers.” Marriage is a team effort. To succeed spouses need the attitude of meekness, the ability to resolve conflicts without letting emotions get in the way. Spouses also need the attitude of peacemaking, the willingness to ask for forgiveness and to reconcile with God and one’s spouse.
Session 4: Your Marriage is Your Treasure explores: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.” Doing what is right in marriage begins with honoring one’s commitment to being faithful. The program invites spouses to protect the treasure that is their marriage from anything that might destroy it, such as: relationships outside of marriage, the use of internet and social networks, and pornography.
Session 5: Your Marriage is Your Home explores: “Blessed are the merciful.” This session is about practicing the works of mercy in our relationship. The video encourages spouses to become aware of each other’s needs and to help one another meet them. Doing so makes the marital relationship the place where spouses want to be more than anywhere else -- their home.
Session 6: Your Marriage is a Celebration of Life explores:” Blessed are the pure in heart.” The video addresses the role of spouses as co-creators with God, and their gratitude to God for all his gifts, including the gift of their sexuality. It also addresses Natural Family Planning.

What People Are Saying
What People Are Saying
“The Beatitudes is another wonderfully produced Catholic Marriage enrichment program from John and Teri Bosio. Their rich background in Catholic Theology and Marriage is well covered in the Beatitudes Book, DVD, and Teaching materials. Their hard work makes it easy for 'normal couples' to lead a fruitful Marriage program for their Parish.
The quality of the DVD production and the excellent couples make the DVD segments something that we look forward to at every date night. Our only regret is that we wish we could meet the couples in person because we feel such a connection with them on our Marriage Enrichment journey.
John and Teri could not have made it any simpler to run an effective Marriage Enrichment Program. There is NO excuse why your Parish should not offer Six Dates for Catholic Couples and The Beatitudes!
John and Teri are very supportive of couples who choose to lead their Marriage Enrichment programs. They are easy to reach and are willing to provide assistance/advice when asked. You are not alone when you choose to present Six Dates for Catholic Couples and The Beatitudes at your Parish!
Thanks for your support and hard work for Catholic Marriage Enrichment!”
Erik and Leah Olsen
“Good to know that other couples experience similar trials and joys in their marriages.”
“A good reference tool and aid to strengthen our marriage and “keep us on track.”
“I enjoyed the videos with the “down to earth”, everyday ordinary people.”
“The book and the discussion questions were excellent ways to get our “date” started.”
“Our leadership team believe that the six date format, with child care, was well received and we intend to offer it again in the future.”
Dennis and Pauline L'Heureux

“The Beatitudes program was a great success in our parish. We had couples that were married only a couple years to some that had been married for over forty years. Since the end of the program they have been telling many others how great it is. They are eagerly awaiting for other enrich programs in the parish. I would recommend it without hesitation to all married couples. God bless.”
Deacon Anthony L Ozene, Sr
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Lafayette, LA
The ‘Beatitudes’ date night program, allowed us and other couples to see how we can personally apply Jesus’ teachings of the beatitudes in our marriage. It helped to see and hear other couples with similar backgrounds facing similar issues and how they approached and resolved those issues.
Jody & Julie
Good Shepherd Catholic Community, Colleyville, TX
“John Bosio has done it again! He's written another insightful and honest reflection on Marriage, this time taking Pope John Paul II's words to the Youth of the World (World Youth Day, 2002) quite seriously when the Pope said that God created man and woman to be happy together, and the Sermon on the Mount is the map for our journey to such happiness. John has unpacked the Beatitudes, and mapped the course for any of us who are married to raise the bar in virtue in our marriages. His companion book and DVD program make this message accessible as Dates for Catholic Couples, which we ourselves found quite meaningful.
May many marriages become Blessed!”

Six Dates
Based the book Happy Together, The Catholic Blueprint for a Loving Marriage
The six videos inspire spouses to become aware of the gift that they are to each other as husband and wife. The topics of the six dates are:
DATE 1: ONCE UPON A TIME... invites couples to remember how their love story began and how it has a special meaning because it is connected to God's love story.
DATE 2: MARRIAGE IS … explains what we believe about marriage as Catholics.
DATE 3: WHAT KEEPS YOU TOGETHER? suggests that it is the goodness they see in each other that keeps husband and wife together. In other words, it is the ability to see God's image in one another.
DATE 4: WHAT ABOUT ME? addresses the problem of selfishness in marriage.
DATE 5: THE BLUEPRINT OF LOVE suggests that to overcome selfishness we need to learn to love as Christ loves. The key attributes of Christ's love are: acceptance, commitment, sacrifice, forgiveness, healing, and service.
DATE 6: WHERE DO I FIND THE COURAGE? reminds us that learning to love like Christ loves is difficult. Prayer and God's grace can help us endure the challenges we encounter in our married life.

#1 Pulpit Invitation to SIX DATES for Catholic Couples
Good morning,
We are...(your name). Those of you who are married remember well the time when you first met your spouse-to-be and started dating. That was a wonderful time in our life, and I am certain that it was the same for you. Are you still dating?
If you are like us and most couples, you may want to go on dates with your spouse but you don’t seem to find the time.We all know that finding the time to be together, just husband and wife, and enjoying each other’s company is essential to nurturing our relationships.
The Church cares about your marriage because your love for each other as husband and wife makes Christ’s love present in your home and in our community. The stronger your love for each other, the more tangible Christ’s love becomes to all of us.
Because of this our pastor and parish staff invite all married couples in the parish to mark their calendar to go on six dates beginning: (date). Childcare will be provided. Come to the parish hall, view a brief video, and then go on your date, just the two of you.
We are offering a program called SIX DATES for Catholic Couples. See the insert in today’s bulletin for details. We will be available after Mass to visit with you and answer your questions. We are also ready to take your registration for this program.
Husbands, if you want to make your wife happy today, be the first in line to sign up for this program. It is fun, it is light, and most of all you don’t have to share your thoughts or feeling with anyone except your wife.
Thank you.
#2 Pulpit Invitation to SIX DATES for Catholic Couples
Invitation from the pastor:
I have a special announcement for all married couples here.
Do you know that the Church cares about your marriage?
The Church needs each of your to have a strong marriage.
I, and the parish staff invite each husband here today to take his wife on a date. The parish will provide childcare.
In the coming weeks, we will offer a program called SIX DATES for Catholic Couples. Beginning on (date), you are invited to bring your children to the parish, view a brief video, and then go on your date. See the bulletin for details.
Jim and Linda Smith will be outside the church after each Mass today to take your registration.
Guys, if today you want to make your wife happy, be the first in line to sign up.
#3 Pulpit Invitation to SIX DATES for Catholic Couples
We are...(your name).
Today we have a special announcement for all married couples. This week we celebrate Valentine’s Day and next week is Ash Wednesday. It is our Catholic tradition to make Lent a time to examine our lives and to grow closer to God.
This year our pastor and parish staff would like to ask all married couples in the parish to also make Lent a time to strengthen their marriage.
Studies show that couples can grow in their marriage by making time for each other and having fun together. We would like to suggest that during each of the six weeks of Lent you go on a date with your spouse. The parish will help you by providing child care and topics for your conversation during your date. For more information see the insert in today’s bulletin.
Dating is how you got to know each other when you first met. Dating our spouse helps us stay connected today.
If you like this idea, sign up after Mass. Mary and Jim Smith will take your registration just outside the church.
Husbands, if you want to make your wife happy today, be the first in line to sign up for this program. It is fun, it is light, and most of all you don’t have to share your thoughts or feeling with anyone except your wife.

John and Teri,
We ran the series in our parish center. We started each evening with the video presentation. Couples then proceeded to "dialogue stations" which were designated by a place-setting complete and drinks and snacks, a candle and flowers. The private couple time was followed by a break and then a game. On the last evening we ended with a "party" with dance music and ice-cream sundaes.
We are really looking forward to "The Beatitudes."
Take care. God Bless you!

St. Mary's recently became the first parish in Australia to use SIX DATES for Catholic Couples. One couple who has been married 11 years said, "It was just what we needed at this stage in our lives - an opportunity to reconnect with each other."

Hi John and Teri,
We had our first date night on Nov. 19th. We had 20 couples and it was wonderful! We set up a private "dialogue station" for each couple complete with a candle, flowers, wine, etc. It was a gorgeous sight to see each couple enjoying their private time together. Very positive comments all around at the end of the evening.
We are not doing the dates for 6 weeks in a row - but spreading them out a few weeks apart until the end of March. One session will be a "Celebrate Marriage Mass and Dinner Dance," so we'll have a total of 7 dates! So far, so good - praise God!!
Dick & DuAnne PasquiniQuestion from a program coordinator:
Sept. 19, 2011
John,
Since there are 6 video segments and 11 chapters in the book "Happy Together" which chapters in the book correspond to each video segment? Thank you for your assistance!
Answer:
Thank you for the question. You will find on the back of each handout the recommended chapters. However, we have heard that when it comes to Date 5, there are 5 chapters to read and couples find it difficult. I would recommend an optional schedule below.
Before Date 1, read Introduction and Chapter 2.
Before Date 2, read Chapters 1 and 5.
Before Date 3, read Chapters 3 and 6.
Before Date 4, read Chapters 4 and 7.
Before Date 5, read Chapters 8 and 9.
Before Date 6, read Chapters 10 and 11 and Conclusion.
This option distributes the reading more evenly.

Hello Mr. and Mrs. Bosio,Thank you so much for your wonderful book and videos. Our Parish, St. Rose of Lima in Chula CA, has enjoyed the series.
The interest as been so great that many want to continue beyond the Six Dates for Catholic Couples. Any suggestions? Do you have another book or more videos? If not, could you recommend a similar book with a DVD (video series) for Catholic Couples?
God Bless,

We will have our Date Four next Saturday (4/16) and our couples are totally enjoying it. We have 13 couples. Of course, not every couple comes every date night, but each night is special. To see and be part of the friendships that are being forged is really a blessing. Most couples want to stay and share after their time alone with the handout. We have heard some unique honeymoon stories!!
Our couple from Britain shared that he was in the Merchant Marines and went out to sea right after they married. Turned out she was able to join him on the ship for a few days. The cook jumped ship, she ended up recruited as cook (and never baked more than a batch of brownies in her life!) She shared that cooking on rough seas proved very challenging. (BTW, I got permission to share this).
Thank you for the program. It is a real blessing to all parishes and couples facilitating it, without a doubt.

Dear John and Teri,
The Six Dates for Catholic Couples group at St. Benedict the Abbey cannot thank you both enough for the wonderful program you have produced. We had 54 couples registered. We did an expanded evaluation - and everyone present would highly recommend the program to others - and they want to continue in marriage enrichment. Their comments were inspiring and uplifting.

Hi John,
We have been averaging about 30 couples each month. That is GREAT for us!
I received this email from a HUSBAND!!! I was so excited!
From Tom:
Subject: Thanks for a great date!
That was the best date Melissa and I have had in years!
Just wanted to thank you for arranging all of this. We really appreciate all the work that went into organizing this, and we are looking forward to the rest of the date nights.
How cool is that?!

I do want you to know that the program was very well received here when we did it this fall. The evaluations were very good and one comment they all seemed to have was that they enjoyed the stories Ben and I told after they watched the DVD, relating to the topic.
My husband Ben and I took a few minutes each time to share examples from our own marriage to illustrate the focus of each particular date. This doesn’t have to be too involved and in fact, needs to be short since we want the couples to have enough time for their date, particularly if they are using our childcare. But they all seemed to enjoy that part of it and thanked us for offering the program.
Peace and all good things,

Hello, John and Teri!
I wanted to give you an update on the initial "Six Dates for Catholic Couples" marriage program that we are currently holding at our parish. We have 12 couples, and meet on Wednesday evenings. It has gone well so far (we are in week 4). Just to let you know that before our couples go their separate ways, we have a prayer together for those present...and also for you and the married couples at your parish as well!
Interestingly enough, couples have told me that after "all" the years of married bliss...the questions in the book, as well as the date night handouts, make them feel a bit "uncomfortable" (which is a good thing!)...because they have not reflected on so much of what is being asked. The couples love this!
God bless!

Hi John & Teri,
Our first offering of SIX DATES for Catholic Couples is off to a great start - thanks to your help! 55 couples are participating. We're conducting the program on Saturday nights - stretched out over the course of nine weeks, because we're scheduling around other all-parish activities (dinners and auctions). We gather right after the Vigil Mass for prayer and the video, then we dismiss the couples for their dates. Half of the couples are taking advantage of the complimentary childcare! The childcare is being run by families who couldn't go on the dates this fall, but are such strong supporters of marriage that they wanted to help their brothers and sisters.
Very positive feedback so far. One couple recently told me, "It just seems like the Church cares about us in a new, deeper way. Thank you." We already have a waiting list forming for a Spring 2011 offering. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks again, on behalf of the many couples you're helping in our parish.
